I Suck At New Moon

i'm a glutton for punishment. i'll watch bad movies... just because. and believe me, i've seen a lot of bad movies. similarly, i'll read awful books... just because.

the latest book that i just finished is "new moon". now, i suck at new moon. new moon is the second book in the twilight series. for anyone curious, the twilight series is supposed to be the next big thing... if you're an adolescent girl. the twilight series is basically a vampire romance series.

when i read the first book... twilight... i absolutely thought the book was awful. in my post about twilight, i basically summarized the entire story as "i shouldn't love you because you're a vampire... but i love you..." or something like that because those lines are repeated quite frequently in the novel. (the other perspective is "remember.. i'm a vampire. i'm bad for you. you shouldn't love me... but i love you.")

anyway, as luck (or misfortune) would have it, my friend (andrea) lent me the second book in the series. and like the sucker that i am, i decided to read it. after all, i feel compelled to complete the awful series just because it's a series.

needless to say, new moon was equally awful. for a while, i actually liked the book better than twilight because the main character stopped doing the whole "i shouldn't love you because you're a vampire... but i love you..." thing. unfortunately, the main character ended up doing the "woes me. i can't live without you. i want to die. turn me into a vampire..." thing in the second book. awful.

the part of the book that i thought was even remotely interesting was the antagonist who wanted to hunt the main character down and kill her. the reason why that probably was so interesting to me was because the main character absolutely drives me nuts. so maybe it was just wishful thinking that the main character would die and quit her whining about her vampire lover.

i think the worst part about the novel, aside from the ridiculous werewolf that gets introduced as one of her friends, is that the book simply ends with a "to be continued" feeling. in essence, the novel is not even a real novel. the book almost reminded me of the second pirates of the caribbean movie. for anyone curious, the second pirates of the caribbean movie basically had no plot other than lead up to the third movie. similarly, new moon felt like that.

the storyline basically is about how a certain vampire is hunting the main character... the main character's friend becomes a werewolf, sworn to protect the land against vampires... and then out of the blue... the main character flies to italy to reunite with her vampire boyfriend. that's it. that's the book. i can't believe that the twilight series novels were the best-selling books of the year in 2008. so far, the entire series is awful. needless to say, i'm not impressed.

harry potter... much more interesting...
