I Suck At P.S. I Love You

last night, karen and i decided to have a movie date night. we haven't had a night to just sit back, relax on our couch together, and watch a movie on our ginormous television in some time. (one of the reasons why i wanted to get a ginormous television in the first place was to watch movies...) so yesterday seemed as good a night as any to watch a movie.

the movie that we watched: ps. i love you. now i suck at p.s. i love you. as it turns out, the movie is based on the book of the same name written by cecilia ahern. although i have not read the book, i would hazard a guess that the book is probably better written than twilight.

anyway, the movie stars hilary swank of "the next karate kid" fame... and "beverly hills 90210" fame... (well, she's probably more known for her academy award winning roles, but i like to think of her as the next karate kid even though it was a terrible movie.) as well, gerard butler of "300" stars as her husband.

(the video below is a trailer for the movie.)

interestingly enough, the movie actually has a bunch of other actors and actresses like lisa kudrow of "friends", kathy bates, gina gershon, etc., but the one actor that seemed to have gotten little fanfare: james marsters. for anyone curious, james marsters plays the one and only, spike, from the greatest television show ever: buffy the vampire slayer. (although truth be told, seeing james marsters with brown wavy hair... weird.)

anyway, the premise of the movie is that gerard butler's character passes away. before his death, he writes a bunch of letters to hilary swank to help her move on with her life. it's an interesting concept... especially these days when the art of writing has gone by the wayside in favor of text messaging and email. (and i'll admit, i'm guilty of that as well... just look at my failed use of capitalization in this blog.)

but that's another topic altogether. as far as chick flick movies go, "p.s. i love you" was not that bad. for me, i think the saving grace... aside from james marsters who was hardly even in the movie... and the interesting concept of writing letters to your spouse before dying... was ireland. as i seem to enjoy all things irish, the fact that ireland is featured in the movie definitely helped. what can i say? ireland is just so beautiful with its lush greenery. (for anyone curious, gerard butler plays an irish guy. him and hilary swank met in ireland... hence, the connection to ireland.)

as for karen, i think she enjoyed the movie as well. apparently, she was in tears throughout most of the movie. (it was a chick flick after all.) i think one of the other things that i did like about the movie was the notion of individuality. basically, gerard butler wanted hilary swank to discover that which made her... her... so that she could move on.

all too often, i sometimes find that when people get in a relationship, their sense of self is lost and the couple becomes a collective. obviously, the notion of becoming one is instilled into everyone due to marriage traditions and whatnot. and naturally, a couple does have to function together for the greater whole. that said, i do believe that relationships should be more additive than transformative... if that makes sense.

all in all, it was an okay movie. i had a great time watching the movie with karen. of course, i joked with karen that should i pass away soon, i would send her videos instead of letters... telling her to get over it... (which i would hope she would be able to do and move on with her life).

oh yes, i almost forgot. as an interesting side note, it came to my attention yesterday about who should play my friend (bill) if there were ever a movie about bill or the rest of us. my casting choice: randy quaid.

(pictured below is randy quaid... as bill.)

for the record, randy quaid was not in "p.s. i love you". the random thought just happened to come courtesy of a discussion i had with my friend (andrea).
