tonight, karen and i did something new: we attended a family performance at the local library. the performance was presented by the celtic bells. now, i suck at the celtic bells. apparently, the celtic bells are a family from leominster. they sing. they dance. they perform a whole slew of instruments. and most importantly, they are irish.
karen and i randomly stumbled upon the promotion for the performance one day when we were visiting our local library. the promotion just mentioned that they were an irish family that performed irish things. as i love all things irish... including my wife karen... karen and i decided to attend the family performance. so, naturally we signed up to attend the event. (i must say, i love our local library. the librarians are nice... and now they have these special events... who knew?)
needless to say, the family performance was very enjoyable. interestingly enough, we saw a member of the cemetery committee (gertrude) at the performance. in addition to helping us determine our cemetery plots for our son (braden), gertrude attended our braden's service. she recognized us as well... probably because i stick out in our town of norwell... and asked how both of us were doing since the service. it was nice that she remembered us.
in addition to gertrude, we also happened to see my bff's (kerry) aunt (fran). for anyone who has been inside our house, fran is the artist who painted a picture of our house when the house was just an itty bitty cottage... and she also painted a picture of our house when the house was renovated to have a second floor. the two pictures are hanging side by side near one of our doors.
fran lives in hull. it just so happens that fran's cousin, who lives in norwell, happened to also see the promotion for the celtic bells and decided to sign them both up.
all in all, it was a fun... and informative night. karen and i learned about the difference between scottish and irish bag pipes; how the scottish and irish imitated deer in their dance; how the church did not want people to dance with movements above the waist, which consequently led to irish step dancing; a wooden toy called a dancing man; appalachia spoons based on the shipping instrument known as bones; and probably most interesting: the name kayleigh is derived from the word for party... it explains a lot about my niece.
i am hoping the local library has other fun performances in the future. for anyone curious, the celtic bells came highly recommended from other libraries. i can't wait.
