I Suck At Celebrating My Friend's Birthday

On Saturday, Karen and I celebrated my friend's (Andrea) birthday. Happy belated birthday Andrea! Andrea's birthday (and for anyone curious... Dustin Hoffman's) was not until Sunday (8/8). In celebration, Andrea wanted to have dinner at the Union Brew House located in Weymouth.

Too bad I suck at celebrating my friend's birthday. Before dinner, Karen and I dropped off our baby daughter (Briana) with my favorite sister-in-law (Janine) and my favorite brother-in-law (PJ). Incidentally, PJ's cousin is dating a frequent patron of the Union Brew House who is the self-proclaimed Mayor of Weymouth. If I can't get my friend (Cass) to run for mayor of Quincy, I should at least try to get him to proclaim that he is the mayor... much like PJ's cousin's significant other.

Anyway, it has been a while since anyone has babysat our daughter. The reason is not because we don't trust anyone or anything like that. Heck, I'd probably let anyone watch our daughter. Karen and I simply haven't gone out alone. Briana is cramping our style. Just kidding.

Thinking that everything would be fine, we left Briana with Janine, PJ, their kids, and Janine's BFF (Gretchen). So off we went to celebrate at the Union Brew House. Karen and I were the first to arrive. For anyone curious, the Union Brew House is a tiny hole in the wall. I would say that the Brew House's "thing" is that is has 99 different types of beer available. 99 may have been one too many for this particular guy who was trying to pick up some women at a nearby table when Karen and I first arrived. For me, it was a little comical watching this guy. He was simply awful. He had no idea that the husband of one of the women had been sitting at the table. Yes, he was quite the catch.

Eventually everyone else showed up. Partaking in the festivities for the night were Andrea (the birthday girl of course), and my friends (Marc, Kelley, Kerry, Hot Amy) and Hot Amy's fiancee (Mark). It was good to see everyone. I don't think I have seen Hot Amy and Mark in quite some time. I believe they have been a little preoccupied with wedding plans. Apparently, Hot Amy has finally picked out a wedding dress. Whether true or not, Mark mentioned using the Mortal Kombat theme as the song to enter the reception area with. If Hot Amy and Mark use that song, I will be very impressed.

As a side note, the new Mortal Kombat movie trailer does look pretty exciting.
(The video below is a trailer for the Mortal Kombat rebirth.)

Kelley had shared the above with me some time ago. And for a movie based on a video game, I would have to say that the trailer does in fact make the movie look pretty exciting. (Historically, movies based on video games are never good.)

Regardless, it was a fun night hanging out with everyone. I think Andrea had a good time, which is really all that mattered for the night. Andrea, Marc, and Kelley were thinking of other movies for movie night. The 80s theme had progressed into a 90s theme. And although I don't think the movie made the cut, the movie "Threesome" was mentioned. (For anyone curious, "Threesome was made in 1994 and starred Lara Flynn Boyle and Stephen Baldwin.)

Unfortunately, Karen and I had to leave the festivities early. Remember... I do suck at celebrating my friend's birthday. Apparently, things weren't going too well at Janine's with Briana. Briana was crying non-stop. She cried. Janine cried. Her kids cried. I felt pretty bad for Janine and them.

I am thinking that Briana is having attachment issues, which does not bode well for our upcoming babysitting gig later this week. Anyway, I hope Andrea enjoyed her day. Again happy belated birthday, Andrea!

I Suck At The Union Brew House

last night, karen had plans with my friend (jen) and my bff (kerry). the plans involved visiting kerry in salem for a "chicks night out". apparently, it was country music night at some place up by kerry... and as all three of them are country bumpkins, they planned to give the place a go.

if it were up to me, i would probably have karen partake in more ladies' nights because i think it's good for her to be out and about... enjoying herself without having to worry or think about things like the passing of our son (braden)... or even worrying about me. unfortunately, i don't organize any of these nights out.

needless to say, while karen was out, i decided to hang out with my friends (marc, kelley, and andrea). the plan: the union brew house, located in weymouth. now, i suck at the union brew house. i have not been there in about three months. (if you are to look back at my postings, it was march.) and interestingly enough, all the times i have gone... andrea has been with me. this time was no different.

marc and kelley had heard about the brew house themselves and had never gone. so, we figured last night was as good a time as any to go. plus, andrea and i still had to work on achieving our goal of completing the list of beers offered at the union brew house. for anyone curious, the union brew house has a list of 99 beers that they serve. should a patron consume all of these beers (not at one sitting of course), the patron would receive a commemorative plaque and a t-shirt. and as a side note, young's chocolate stout is pretty good.

anyway, it just so happens that while at the brew house, andrea noticed my favorite brother-in-law's (pj) cousin's (tiffany) boyfriend (darren) at one end of the outdoor area. (we were seated in the outdoor area.) at my last encounter at the brew house, andrea, pj, and i were introduced to darren by tiffany.

darren, known to patrons as "the mayor of the brew house", was doing a little shimmy and giving someone a little neck rub. at the time, the person receiving the neck rub was blocked from my view... by darren's rhythmic undulating dance moves... not that it would have mattered anyway because i did not wear my glasses to the brew house.

curious, i called pj to see if tiffany and darren were still dating. well, as it turns out, tiffany was actually there with darren. for the record, neither andrea nor i could see her... probably because we were entranced by the rhythmic undulations of darren's shimmy.

anyway, it was a rather comical moment because pj wanted me to take a picture of darren. apparently, there is some joke going around the family that they are watching darren... all the time.

needless to say, it was fun at the brew house... hanging with my friends... and running into tiffany and darren.

I Suck At The Union Brew House

tonight i did something rather spontaneous: i went to the union brew house located in weymouth. now, i suck at the union brew house. i have not been to the union brew house in quite some time. the last time i went, i went with my friend (andrea) and we saw an old friend (kevin).

needless to say, tonight i went to the union brew house... again with andrea. earlier in the day, andrea and i had conversed with each other via instant messenger. she had just recently sent off her final car payment and with work being such a stressful situation, she wanted to celebrate of sorts. as i had no plans for the night, i decided to celebrate andrea's achievement with her.

so, we decided to go to the union brew house. for me, it was my second time ever going there. one of the draws about going to the union brew house is that... as andrea put it... the brew house is like quincy... only not really. that may or may not be true. for me, i just wanted to sample the alcohol because there is a lot of variety in terms of beer that is offered at the union brew house. the union brew house offers this challenge of sorts whereby if a patron drinks all of the 99 bottled beers that they offer, they will receive a plaque with their name on it and a free t-shirt. as i am a sucker for free t-shirts, i (and andrea) decided to take up the challenge.

with a scorecard to keep track of all the beers, andrea and i had a nice dinner accompanied with a variety of bottled beers. i had a mushroom swiss burger with spicy fries. the meal was very good... and the plethora of fries were actually spicy. the beers i had imbibed when the night was done were: hoegaarden (i loved the name), julius echter hefe-weissbier, long tail seasonal, negro modelo, newcastle brown ale, old speckled hen, and wachusett seasonal.

making things more interesting was the fact that my favorite brother-in-law (pj) showed up as well. pj absolutely chuckled when i had called him during our dinner. the last time i had called him, i was face down in my front lawn... a result of a little too much scotch. using the same lines i said during that fateful incident, i convinced him to meet us at the union brew house.

consequently, pj showed up at the union brew house and the three of us hung out together. it was actually pj's first time at the union brew house. in fact, for a place he has never been to, pj actually enjoyed the union brew house. anyway, the three of us hung out... imbibing on a few drinks or so... laughing and whatnot as we enjoyed each other's company.

partly through the night, a woman and a man approached our table. i was actually amazed because the woman happened to be pj's cousin (tiffany). tiffany looked so different with her glasses and her different hair style. even pj did not recognize tiffany until she took off her glasses. tiffany was with her new boyfriend (darren) whom she actually met at the union brew house.

anyway, tiffany and darren joined us at our table. apparently, there has been a big to-do with tiffany's new boyfriend because darren had to pass the "pj test". darren had already met tiffany's parents, yet for some reason... pj was next on the list to meet him. luckily, we just happened to be at the union brew house when they were at the union brew house. (i have been told that tiffany and darren frequent the union brew house a lot since they both live not too far from the place.)

truth be told, darren seems like a nice guy. in fact, he seems a whole lot better than tiffany's ex-husband... whom i refer to as the alaskan assassin (because he came from alaska).

for the rest of the night, the five of us sat around the table... hanging out... laughing and being silly. it was quite the fun time. i may have been sillier than the rest because i tend to laugh a lot more when inebriated... not that i was inebriated or anything. (i think darren would like to take me home because i laughed at all of his... and tiffany's jokes.)

darren, by the way, is the youngest of 14 children. he apparently seems to know everyone... much like my friend (carlos). in fact, darren used to work at the union brew house, so he knew a lot about the beers that the place offered... and the waitstaff.

unfortunately, the night of silliness had to come to end. after all, my hugging ways can only last so long. nonetheless, i had a fun time tonight with andrea and pj... and tiffany and darren. it was definitely a fun night. and with 7 bottled beers down, i have 92 on the list to go. hopefully, i can complete the remaining task of drinking the other bottled beers and get that t-shirt. i don't even know what the t-shirt looks like, but i hope it's worth it.

let's see... 99 bottles of beer... each priced to be at least $5 or more... that would be close to $500 or so... i'm guessing a $500 t-shirt should be worth it. the t-shirt better be laced with gold. perhaps someday i'll find out.

interestingly enough, i learned tonight that a man has earned about 7 plaques and t-shirts... by himself. that's quite the motivation... either that or quite the drinking problem.

regardless, i had a fun time tonight. i probably don't spend as much time with pj and andrea as i should. it was definitely fun tonight.

I Suck At The Union Brew House

tonight was quite the spontaneous night.

apparently, karen had plans with my friends (jen and joanna). so i would be home by my lonesome while karen partied it up with the ladies. as it turned out, while i was working today... my friend (andrea) contacted me via instant messenger. (you have to love the power of instant messenger.) andrea asked if i wanted to go to the union brew house tonight. naturally, i suck at the union brew house. i have never been to union brew house. and since i'm always up for something new, i figured i'd give it the old college try.

for anyone curious, the union brew house is located in weymouth on route 53... near the fork that leads to bj's wholesale. the union brew house is tiny... with very little parking. andrea, after picking me up after work, parked in the parking lot across the street at the boston sports club. apparently, andrea had visited the union brew house on a whim one night and thoroughly enjoyed herself. thus, we decided to go there tonight.

i must say, the place is quite interesting. i believe the union brew house prides itself on having 99 varieties of beer available... as evident from the menu and the t-shirts that the bartenders wore. and, as andrea would describe the place, the union brew house is like quincy... only not.

interestingly enough, andrea was totally correct in that the union brew house was like quincy... only not. the bartender tonight happened to be someone i graduated high school with. i believe his name was brian. in addition, i saw some other familiar quincy faces who went to my high school (kevin, jack, and kurt). it was definitely interesting to say the least. (kevin, by the way, recommends going to brew house on a tuesday when the fireplace is going and the place is not as crowded.)

nonetheless, i had a good time. the music was pretty good... 80s tunes... for which i totally am a fan of... and the beer selection was quite intriguing. i tried red stripe, a jamaican beer, for the first time. my boss from my previous company had loved red stripe. he used to rave about it, so i figured i would try it. needless to say, i will probably never try red stripe again. red stripe was not that good. instead, the smuttynose old brown dog ale and the gritty mcduff's pale ale were far more enjoyable. (yes, i chose the beer because of the name.)

as for the food, the food was quite good. granted, i only ate part of andrea's food as i had already eaten beforehand... but what i did have was very delicious (fries and part of her sandwich). needless to say, i enjoyed myself tonight. it was definitely a fun time to hang out with andrea. i don't think i have actually hung out with just andrea before. it was a welcomed change. (i'm not sure if she thought the same thing, but i did have a good time.) plus, i got to witness firsthand the type of men that andrea was interested in... as there were a handful to choose from.

all in all, i'm glad i had the opportunity tonight to hang out with andrea. i definitely don't hang out with her as much as i should... which is a shame. anyway, i hope she was able to enjoy herself as well tonight.
