I Suck At Church Class

On the agenda for the night: a church class. Yes, thrilling I know. Now, I suck at church class. Unfortunately, it seems like many of the things that people (in particular, Catholics) do for their religion involve taking some sort of class. There is the marriage preparation class (also known as pre-Cana); There is CCD (which stands for Catholic Christian Doctrine); So naturally there must be a class for christenings, right?

Apparently, tonight's class was not so much of a class, but more of a meet-and-greet type of thing. Awhile ago, Karen had inquired about getting our baby daughter (Briana) christened at the local church (St. Helen). Again, were the decision solely up to me, I would not have Briana christened as it will bias her toward a specific faith without giving her the opportunity to choose otherwise. But since things are sometimes done to appease family members, sacrifices sometimes have to be made. Nevertheless, when Karen inquired about getting Briana christened, we were told that we would have to take a class. That class was tonight.

Joining in on the class festivities was my favorite sister-in-law (Janine) who was asked to be Briana's parent. For anyone curious, my favorite brother-in-law (PJ) is the other godparent. But since he had to watch the kids, it was only Janine who was available for the night. Thus, the three of us attended the church class.

Like I had mentioned earlier, the class was basically a meet-and-greet. Karen and I met the priest (again). We had first met the priest during our marriage preparation class over seven years ago. As far as priests go, I find him more sociable than other men of the cloth. Plus, he seems a little more realistic in terms of teaching faith within today's society.

Essentially, the class was for parents who have their first child. Granted, Briana is our second child because we lost our first (Braden) during his early life. But since we never had a church christening, we had to attend the class.

Truth be told, it was a nice meeting with the priest. He essentially told us what to expect on the day of Briana's christening, what the christening is all about, etc. He was just easy to talk to. I can't believe the christening is so soon because I still have not finished the first floor bathroom renovation project yet. My time to spruce up the bathroom is definitely running out.
