I Suck At The Celtics Game

Tonight, the Boston Celtics were playing the Golden State Warriors. Now, I suck at the Celtics game. Luckily for me, my friend (Andrea) does not. Andrea was lucky enough to score some tickets to tonight's basketball game through her other friends. And it just so happens that I was also lucky enough to be invited to go with her tonight. Thank you Andrea!

Needless to say, I had a very enjoyable night. Raising a one year old and a three year old, I don't get to go out that often. So it's always nice to be able to go out once in awhile and just have fun. And it's even more fun when the hometown team lays a smackdown on the visiting Warriors 94-86. It wasn't the prettiest game, but at least the Celtics played a lot better than the time I went with my friends (Cass and Marc). Paul Pierce and Jeff Green were the stars of the game.

And it was definitely fun to hang out with Andrea again. Among the topics of discussion that came up during the night was finding a sugar daddy for Andrea. That led to discussions about whether or not she would drop her friends when she found a sugar daddy. And there may have been a brief discussion about the tactile sensation of making out with someone considerably older.

One of the more interesting things I found out today was that Andrea enjoys photography. I always knew that she liked taking pictures. I just didn't know how much until she mentioned that she wanted to start a blog on photography. I thought that was interesting. Of course, I also thought that the fact that she had a book about the New Kids on the Block interesting as well. Apparently, she was a closet fan. And naturally, I'm curious about the book myself. Best boy band ever.

All in all, I had a great time just hanging out and having fun. Thanks again Andrea.

I Suck At Basketball

On Friday, I met up with my friends (Cass and Marc) in town. For some time, the three of us have been going to a basketball game for my birthday. I'm not exactly sure how the tradition started, but the annual event is one of the few things that I look forward from year to year because it's a chance to just hang out with the guys, which for me is sometimes difficult to do at times being a parent of two.

Needless to say, it was a great time especially since by Friday my mind is usually mush from work. Anyway, we started the night off with dinner at Hurricane O'Reilly's. The food was good. I had the Hurricane Burger. And because I like girlie drinks, I had a drink known as a Pineapple Pleasure. I ordered the drink for its fruity nutritional content of course.

From there, we went to the basketball game at the Garden where the hometown team (Celtics) were playing the Chicago Bulls. For anyone curious, the Bulls ended up winning the game 100-99 in overtime. Now, I suck at basketball. On Friday night, I would have to say the Celtics sucked at basketball. Aside from Rajon Rondo, the Celtics seemingly missed every shot. The Celtics never had the lead in the game until midway through the fourth and final quarter. And unfortunately, they relinquished that lead due to some shady officiating where an attempt to foul turned into a jump ball. They even had the lead in overtime, but they left too much time on the clock for the Bulls to score the final basket.

Sure, it was a disappointing loss. I think watching the fans on the jumbotron was probably more exciting. Mental note: to get on the jumbotron, wear an ugly sweatshirt with a howling wolf on it the next time I attend a game. There was a fan who wore just that... and was on the jumbotron all the time because whenever he was shown, the entire place started howling. It was comical.

Oh, and I'd have to say that one of the other memorable things about the game was the national anthem. The anthem was sung by this really young girl who did an amazing job. I was quite impressed by how well she sang, as were the rest of the fans.

The only other notable thing from the game was that one of Karen's coworkers also attended the game. Karen told me to look for her coworker behind the Celtics bench. Needless to say, I looked... but couldn't see her. Oh well. At least I looked.

I Suck At Basketball

Last night, my mother spent the night at our house. For the past week, my mother has been kind enough to stop by and help take care of our baby daughter (Briana) while I work and while Karen transitions back to work.

Rather than drive home last night and return early this morning, my mother asked to spend the night. Among her reasons (besides being with Briana of course) is that she wanted to stay to watch the NBA finals. As the basketball game would most likely end late at night, it only made sense. For anyone curious, my mother has recently become a big sports fan. You name the sport, and she's all into it... except hockey. I don't think she's gotten around to that sport yet.

Anyway, I suck at basketball. Technically speaking, the Celtics suck at basketball. The Celtics played a decent three quarters of the game. Sure, they blew a double digit lead, but they still had the lead. They just came undone in the fourth quarter, which was quite typical of their season this year. They are definitely a frustrating team to watch, that's for sure. And now sadly, the Los Angeles Lakers are champions (again).

Needless to say, it was nice to hang out and watch the game with my mom. Granted, she doesn't really know the game that well. She knows enough to be a Boston fan: ie. the Lakers suck. Kobe sucks (and is a rapist). Gasol sucks. That other stupid European guy with the funny last name sucks.

So even though the Celtics lost, it was good to hang out with my mom. I feel I haven't done that in some time. And sure, she may drive me crazy at times... but it's only natural... she's my mom. And yes, the Lakers still suck.

I Suck At The Celtics Game

I had a great time Friday night.

On Friday, my friends (Cass and Marc) and I went to the Celtics game. Now, I suck at the Celtics game.

For my birthday (in December), Cass and Marc got tickets to the basketball game. In fact, they also got me tickets for a basketball game the year prior as well. So I guess you can say going to a Celtics basketball game for my birthday is almost like a tradition now.

Needless to say, the experience was great. The Celtics were playing against the Indiana Pacers. The Celtics absolutely destroyed the Pacers by a score of 122-103, which really was not much of a surprise because the Pacers are not that great of a team. Truth be told, I don't think I can even name a player on the Pacers... even after watching them on Friday night. (And as proof that the team is awful, the Pacers have about five white guys on the team...)

Anyway, it was fun just hanging out with Cass and Marc. We met up for dinner before the game at Hurricane O'Reilly's, which also seems to be a tradition now before a Celtics game. It turns out that Cass is planning to do the deck project that he has had in the works for a while this year.

Speaking of Cass, we had a little scraping of paint incident involving his car when we left the game. The incident was almost reminiscent of the time when we were in high school and a bunch of us were crammed in his car. Unable to see through the back (due to everyone being jam-packed in the car), Cass had the car in reverse. At the time, my friend (Nhut) assured Cass that everything was good while he was backing the car up, even boldy proclaiming "we'll be your eyes." Those words proved to be a memorable phrase because shortly after Nhut said them, Cass hit something.

On Friday, it was just Marc and I in the car. But Cass accidentally hit something while backing his car out of the his spot in the garage... which of course naturally made all of us think of the "we'll be your eyes" incident. Of course, the difference this time was that neither Marc nor I made that claim.

All in all, I had a blast on Friday. Thanks again Cass and Marc for the present. It was great.

I Suck At The Celtics Game

I had a great time last night.

Last night was sort of a guys night out for me. I don't think I have had one of those in awhile. My friends (Cass and Ron) and I attended the Celtics game last night. Unfortunately, I suck at the Celtics game. The NBA's greatest franchise, the Boston Celtics, were playing the Miami Heat.

Cass happened upon the tickets and asked if we wanted to go. So off we went! The plan was to meet up for dinner in town and then head over to the game. As Ron and I were not in town, we decided to meet up at the train station.

Interestingly enough, while waiting for Ron at the train station, I got to watch the breaking news about a shooting outside of my high school alma mater: North Quincy. I don't know the particulars about the shooting, but Ron and I could see the police cars surrounding the school on our way into town. Like I had joked with Ron, Quincy has gone downhill since we both moved out.

Speaking of which, this would be a great platform to build Cass's campaign for mayor around. Of course, I don't have any empirical data yet to prove this. Quincy, however, has been in the news recently all for the wrong reasons: crime. And what is one thing that a lot of people fear? Increased crime rates.

Fear is great motivator when it comes to the political world. After all, fear in my opinion is what got President Bush (senior) elected President in 1988. Bush's opponent at the time was former governor of Massachusetts, Michael Dukakis. If there is one person Bush senior should thank, it's Willie Horton. Willie Horton was a convict who committed a heinous crime while on furlough, a program that was supported by Dukakis while as governor. Dukakis was consequently labeled as being soft on crime and could never recover from the negative image. His popularity with the voters simply plummeted.

Similarly, I think the same type of campaign could be run for Cass. With the seemingly increased incidents of crime in the city, current Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch (pronounced like the soft drink Coke) could be labeled as soft on crime. Of course, this also gives me the excuse to use the campaign slogan "Don't be a Koch-head... Vote Cass." Now all I have to do is convince Cass to run for mayor of Quincy.

Sorry, I digress. Ron and I met Cass at Hurricane O'Reilly's for dinner. It was a little comical because out of the three of us, I was the only one to not order a salad. (I had a burger.) It also turns out that Cass and his wife (Ellen) are attempting the infamous Atkins diet, to which I cautioned him about the possible side effect of stinky breath complements of the process known as ketosis. Luckily for me, I'm not on a diet. I enjoy food too much.

Among other topics of discussion for the night besides the food, carbs, and diabetes were silly things like Ron's daughter's (Uma) love for all things Miley Cyrus. I am guessing she puts her hands up and nods her head like yeah. And really, when it comes to partying in the United States, who wouldn't?

As well, I had mentioned to Ron that since my son (Braden) passed away, I seem to have a different outlook on things concerning work. Before, I used to have certain working goals that I would make x amount of money or have a certain type of title. I would not say that those types of things do not matter any more. They do to some extent. For me though, those things seem so trivial now in comparison to friends and family.

It's almost as though Braden's passing has taught me that there are more important things to life than money; that if you focus on these trivial things, life will pass you by. Before you know it, you will have missed all these wonderful opportunities with the things that matter like friends and family. With everything in my life now, I don't want to look back and think about missed chances.

As for the actual Celtics game, it was great.

(The video below is from the Celtics game.)

The Celtics ended up defeating the Heat 107-102. Even though all-star Paul Pierce did not play due to injury, it was great watching the Celtics win. It was also great to just hang out and enjoy the night with my friends. Needless to say, it was fun time.

I Suck At The Celtics Game

yesterday, i went to the celtics game with my friends (cass and marc). earlier in the nba season, cass and marc took me to the celtics game for my birthday. it was a very touching present... and one that i will probably always remember because it meant a lot to me back then following the passing of my son (braden).

anyway, as the three of us had a great time back then, we decided to try to go to another game this year. as it turns out, one of cass's friends has season tickets to the celtics. cass's friend was not going to be using the three tickets for the game yesterday, so he sold them to us. needless to say, i suck at the celtics game.

prior to the game, marc and my friend (kelley) picked me up as karen had our only car. karen was going to salem with my friend (jen) to meet up with my bff (kerry). it was fun to hang out with marc and kelley before the game because i got to watch kelley play resident evil 5. nothing puts a smile on my face like watching zombies getting shot in the head.

from there, cass came and picked both marc and myself up. our plan was to drive into town, grab a bite for dinner, and then head off to the game. so off we went. our first stop: dinner.

originally, we had thought about going to the fours for dinner. unfortunately, the place was absolutely packed and there was quite a long wait. so, the three of us decided to venture next door to hurricane o'reilly's for dinner. we basically snacked on some appetizers... which consisted of wings, nachos, and ravioli... and drinks for a while.

one of the things that we discussed was the fact that cass is going to south africa later this year. i thought that was pretty exciting. i can't say that south africa is on my list of places to see, but i would not be opposed to visiting there. apparently, cass is meeting a friend there who will be receiving an award in south africa. the award is for some article on internal auditing... and it turns out that the award is... well... awarded in south africa. it's very neat. i never even knew internal auditing could be so award-winning... who knew?

the other thing we briefly discussed was coachella. coachella, located in california, is a three day event featuring numerous bands. one of the local radio stations is having a contest whereby they will send a listener to coachella. the only rules of the contest is that the listener needs to submit a video as to why that person should go to coachella. as it turns out, marc wants to go to coachella. so, we did a little brainstorming of what marc could submit for his video.

following dinner, we headed to the game. the celtics were playing the oklahoma city thunder (the who?). for anyone curious, the oklahoma city thunder used to be the seattle supersonics. in fact, the celtics have the thunder/sonics to thank because that is how the organization acquired ray allen.

needless to say, the seattle franchise had to relocate... so it ended up in oklahoma city. the team's colors, by the way, are not so pretty... baby blue.

(pictured below are the celtics playing against the thunder.)

the game itself was fun. aside from knowing that the thunder used to be the sonics, i knew nothing else about the team. the thunder, after all, play in the large market of oklahoma city. there are no superstars on the team... just a couple of bright prospects. so by all accounts, the celtics should have had little trouble beating the team.

the celtics actually looked pretty awful in the beginning of the game. but like most games, the celtics were able to get it in gear with a flick of a switch. the celtics did not start pulling away until the second half. in fact, in the fourth quarter, the game pretty much became the glen "big baby" davis show.

glen "big baby" davis, is a forward who is built like a tank. he received his nick name because he was bigger than the other kids his age and consequently would play with older kids. as he would whine at times, the older kids called him "big baby" and the name stuck... it also happens to be the case that the celtics have the thunder/sonics to thank again because glen davis was also part of the ray allen trade.

anyway, during the game glen "big baby" davis received a cut on his head while going for a rebound. there was a brief stoppage of the game as there was blood on the court. glen davis temporarily left the game... only to return in the fourth quarter to score a lot of baskets.

needless to say, the celtics won the game 103-84. game aside, it was great to just hang out with cass and marc.

I Suck At Watching The Celtics

i had a very enjoyable day today... and not just because the snow has stopped coming down (for now).

today, i went to watch the celtics game with my friends (cass and marc). now, i suck at watching the celtics. i have not been to a celtics game in quite some time. in fact, i have never gone to a celtics game when the celtics were actually a good nba basketball team. the last time i went to a celtics game was when i worked at state street bank... which was my first job out of college.

the only thing i remember about going to the celtics game when i was working at state street was that my coworker (debbie) got herself on the jumbotron. unfortunately, i was not lucky enough to get my mug on the screen during that time... even though i sat right next to her at the game. i did, however, get my picture taken with her once for my state street identification badge.

it's a long story... when i worked at state street bank, all employees were required to have a photo identification badge taken by security which allowed you access to the various buildings. well, one day i happened to go to security with debbie for my picture... and as we were both being silly, we asked if we could get our picture taken together for our badge. apparently, security was not too tight... because they agreed... and much like those photo booth picture scenes that you see on television, debbie and i had our picture taken together.

needless to say, that was a long time ago. i went to the celtics game with her and a couple of other coworkers because we were the lucky raffle winners for that game way back when.

anyway, today's celtics game came as quite a surprise to me. apparently, cass got the tickets through his work and thought it would be a great idea to take me to the celtics game for my birthday. he was able to get three tickets... so him, marc, and i went to the game today for my birthday.

after marc picked me up, we met up with cass and took the mbta subway train in to boston. it was the first time i have been on the subway train since i worked in town... so it was rather nostalgic. ah... the commuting memories. by the way, i must say... i am quite surprised by the state of the streets in quincy. the streets in quincy were absolutely horrendous... it seems like the city of quincy did not even bother to plow its streets. my itty bitty street that my house is on was better plowed than the main streets in quincy. (for anyone curious, if i were a resident of quincy, i would think twice before voting for the current mayor. that's just my opinion.)

regardless, the three of us went to the fours located on canal street for a little pregame celebration. it was nice. we had some nachos and wings... and watched the new england patriots manhandle the arizona cardinals in football. from there, we went to hurrican o'reilly's to meet up with cass's brother (bj)... who incidentally had a flirtatious moment with my bff (kerry). i don't know the complete details, but i heard there were back rubs involved. what can i say?... men can't resist kerry.

interestingly enough, it was at hurricane o'reilly's where i learned a new term... "butterface". i have never heard the term used... until today... and it cracks me up. and for the record, no... the term was not used in regards to my bff. i believe the term was used in regards to our waitperson... who when we first met her... told us that she was a little hoarse and that she did not know why because she did do any yelling or screaming or anything like that. her hoarseness, as the place got busier, seemed to have mysteriously disappeared... interesting.

anyway, the basketball game itself was amazing. (following hurricane o'reilly's, we went to the "gahden".

(the video below is of paul pierce sinking a three pointer for the celtics.)

the celtics easily beat their opponents (the new york knicks). the game was never even close. nonetheless, it was great to watch the celtics... especially with cass and marc. the three of us sat in the promenade... which was quite nice. i've never been in the promenade before in the "gahden".

(the video below is of godzilla... getting the crowd into the game.)

truth be told, to show you how much of a nutcase i have become since my son (braden) passed away... i actually almost started to tear up before the start of the game. as we were finding our seats, cass wished me happy birthday and told me that the game was for me and braden. his words did not seem like much... but it was very touching and i almost started to tear up. in fact, i'll probably remember the sentiments from cass and marc tonight... for my son and i... more than the game itself. it is times like that which make me thankful to be blessed with such great friends.

all in all, i had a fantastic time today. i really am lucky to have such great friends and i hope they will always realize how much i appreciate them.

I Suck At Rolling Rallies

today, the city of boston held a rally for the newest nba champions... the boston celtics! it was the 17th championship that the most decorated sports franchise in the nba (the boston celtics) won. congratulations celtics!

to honor the achievement of the boston celtics, the city of boston had its usual parade of duck boats carrying members of the team. boston has been the sports mecca of late, as the red sox and patriots have also recently had rolling rallies. (the patriots would have had one this year had they not choked in the superbowl... stupid new york giants!)

anyway, i suck at rolling rallies. (apparently, the new england patriots also suck at rolling rallies this year too.) even though the celtics have not won a championship in over twenty years, i did not attend today's rolling rally (which i heard went in the reverse direction of the normal parade route).

the main reason for my absence from the rolling rally... my new job. as i just started my new job this week (and also the fact that my new job is located in marblehead), it made attending the rolling rally a little difficult for me today.

missing the rally definitely felt awkward. my previous job was located smack dab in town near the state house. so, it was quite easy to see the rolling rallies of the past world champions (the red sox and the patriots) within the past five years that i worked there. perhaps i was a little spoiled working in town because there were plenty of rallies to attend within that timespan.

needless to say, i felt a little nostalgic for the good o' times when i could just walk out of the office and watch the parade of champions with my friends. so sad. i wish i went to the rally today. i heard it was amazing.
