On Saturday, Karen, our seven month old baby daughter (Briana) and I attended a birthday party. Now, I suck at birthday parties. The special occasion, however, was for my friend (Sam) and his two children.
Sam is in the armed forces. He and his wife (Tara), who normally live out of state, were making their semi-annual trip up to Massachusetts. It just so happens that in the month of October, their children were celebrating their birthdays. Sam and Tara have two twin boys (Alex and Ben). And the big birthday celebration was for their first birthday.
For Karen and I (and Briana), this was our first time meeting Alex and Ben. Because Sam and Tara live out of state, we have only seen pictures of their two boys. So it was good to meet their little ones on Saturday.
Interestingly enough, the birthday party for the twin babies was held at Blue-22 in Quincy. For anyone curious, Blue-22 is a bar. Normally, I would think that having a baby party at a bar is somewhat peculiar. It just so happens that all of us are childhood friends of one the owners of the bar (Garv). And since Sam and Tara live out of state, I can understand how the party ended up at Blue-22.
Regardless, it was a good time celebrating Alex and Ben's birthday at Blue-22. Joining in on the festivities were Sam and Tara's respective parents, Tara's sister, Garv, my friends (Marc, Kelley, Leeann, Cass, Ellen, Aimee, Jim, Aimee and Jim's children, Scott, Ofelia, Scott and Ofelia's son), the parent (Peggy) of one of my friends, and some of Tara's other relatives. It was a motley crew of sorts.
Sam and Tara got a little present for Briana, which was very thoughtful. Attached to the present was also a specially selected Little Mermaid PEZ dispenser in my honor, which I thought was pretty funny. Speaking of which, Aimee also cracked me up. She gave me this ginormous gummy bear from Yummies in Maine. The gummy bear was absolutely huge. It made me laugh. It is moments like that which make me thankful to have the friends that I do.
Needless to say, it was a fun time to hang out with everyone. Speaking of which, following the birthday party, Karen and I ended up at Marc and Kelley's house to meet their new cat, Jack/Jackson. The cat is very cute and very active. Also meeting the cat for the first time were our friends (Andrea and Steve) and my BFF (Kerry). Andrea, Steve, and Kerry were in town and met up with us after their own little excursion for the day.
All in all, it was a nice day of just hanging out with friends.

I Suck At Wakes
On Thursday, I experienced my first church-held wake. Yes, I suck at wakes. I've been to several wakes held at funeral homes, but never one held within a church... until now. So as weird as this sounds, I was actually a little intrigued about what the differences were between the two services.
Now, it would probably be remiss of me to not pay my proper respects to the individual who passed away. After all, were it not for her, I would not even have the opportunity to experience the church-held wake. So to my friend's (Cass) grandmother, may you embark on your new journey with happiness... and thank you.
Interestingly enough, I did not know Cass's grandmother all that well. She lived a long life... till the age of 101. As it turns out, there was something that she indirectly taught me that I will probably remember for a while... and that is tai chi. Okay, sure she did not really teach me the Chinese martial art. It was more of what Cass told me that his grandmother taught him about tai chi. Without having a visual makes the description difficult. But in essence, Cass told me that the martial art involved a watermelon, cutting it in half, giving one piece to someone, and taking the other piece. (There are motions that go with the description.) Needless to say, I'll always remember the watermelons because it was a funny analogy.
Anyway, the wake was held in a church (St. James) in Chinatown. Karen and I actually lucked out in terms of finding parking. After all, parking is very scarce in Chinatown... stereotypes aside in terms of Asian drivers. After having dinner with my in-laws, and leaving our baby daughter (Briana) with them, Karen and I headed into town. It just so happened that a car in front of the church was pulling out when we were arriving. It was great timing for sure.
The church service wake was nice. Cass, displaying his great microphone skills that will someday be handy when he runs for Mayor of Quincy (if I can ever convince him), presented a nice reflection on his grandmother. In fact, that was pretty much the way the wake went... speaker after speaker recounted stories about Cass's grandmother. And at the end, there was the final viewing and the whole shaking hands with the relatives of the deceased... also known as the part that not a lot of people like because they always feel awkward and uncomfortable thinking of things to say.
All in all, there are pros and cons of having a wake in a church. I did think that the recounting of stories definitely provided a nice personal touch to the wake that you would not normally get at a funeral home. You can feel more connected with the family by listening to the stories. The church-held wake, however, was very linear. Like a mass, there were a progression of things like the rosary and the speeches before the viewing of the body. If someone was looking to make a quick pit stop to offer condolences or whatnot to the family, a church-held wake was probably not the way to go.
Considering the circumstances, it was an interesting night. After picking up Briana, Karen left so that my friend (Marc) and I could hang out with Cass after the wake. It was definitely fun to hang out with the two of them. Unfortunately, we ended up at my friend's (Garv) restaurant, Blue-22 located in Quincy.
You would think that being friends with the restaurant owner would be beneficial. Sadly, I think we know the wrong person when it comes to Blue-22. I hate to say it, but the service is just terrible at Blue-22. That seems to be a common complaint (not just by me, but other people I know) about the place: the service. It's like the waitstaff is trained to come and take your initial order... and never return. And when they do return, they forget to bring something that you ordered... like my second Guinness.
I find it painful to go to Blue-22 at times. The sad thing is, the terrible service can be easily remedied. Oh well. Nevertheless, despite Blue-22, it was a nice night to hang out with Cass and Marc.

I Suck At Blue-22
On Monday night, I met up with a few friends at Blue-22 located in Quincy. Unfortunately, I suck at Blue-22.
I haven't been to Blue-22 in quite a while. Apparently, Blue-22 recently changed its menu... and by "recently" I mean last week. My friend (Garv) who is a partial owner of Blue-22 informed us of the change. In fact, at the time that he mentioned the new menu, Garv was trying one of the new menu items which was some pork dish. He also tried one of the burger sliders that Blue-22 also now offers.
Although I was full, I actually tried the pork and one of the burger sliders. It was very good. I enjoyed the new menu items.
Anyway, the reason why all of us were at Blue-22 was because my friend (Ron) proposed getting all of us together for some laughs, drinks, merriment... and some fantasy football. It has been a long while since I got to hang out with Ron. So it was great to see him again.
Ron had originally proposed the idea of getting the fantasy football owners together before the milestone known as the "trading deadline". For anyone curious, the trading deadline is the deadline where fantasy football owners can no longer trade away players on their respective teams to other owners with hopes of improving their own team.
In other words, Monday was an excuse to get out of the house, hang out, and geek it up over fantasy football. Joining in the geekfest were my friend (Cass), Ron, Garv and I. My friends (Marc, Kelley, and Ellen) unfortunately could not make the shindig.
Needless to say, it was a fun time. Cass's brother (BJ), who is a staple at Blue-22, also temporarily joined us for the geekfest. BJ was doing work while at the restaurant. Plus, he stopped by to pick up his Kango hat that he had lost at Blue-22.
Speaking of Cass, he seemed to have the best time. In terms of fantasy football, Cass without a doubt did the most wheeling and dealing. (This is yet another reason why Cass would be great as mayor of Quincy. Remember that the next time the election comes around!)
Anyway, Cass pulled off two major trades on Monday: one involving Ron and the other involving Garv. Luckily, my fantasy football team is terrible. So there really was no one on my team that garnered any interest. (After all, my team is terrible for a reason.)
All in all, it was a very enjoyable night... fantasy football aside.

I Suck At Blue-22
Last night, Karen and I went to Blue-22. Now, I suck at Blue-22. Blue-22, located in Quincy, is a sports bar co-owned by one of my friends (Garv). Garv... however much my friend (Hot Amy) thinks is an intellectual... was not the reason why Karen and I were there.
The reason why we were at Blue-22 was to celebrate my friend's (Marc) birthday. My friends and I have been celebrating birthdays for everyone in our circle of friends for quite some time. The annual birthday celebration cycle runs every month from August to January. The month of September happened to be Marc's month.
Originally, Marc wanted to go to Blue-22 for his birthday celebration to dethrone the reigning chicken wing champion. So, my friend (Kelley) organized the celebration. For anyone curious, Blue-22 has a gimmick whereby a patron has one and half hours to consume as many chicken wings within the allotted time. Currently, the reigning champion has consumed somewhere in the vicinity of 66 wings. There is now even a woman's category... whereby the reigning female champion consumed 30 wings.
Needless to say, Marc thought he could break the current record. Truth be told, Marc, my friend (Cass), or I could probably eat more than 70 wings in the given time. We're big guys after all. As it turned out, Marc decided against the wing challenge last night. He still, however, may partake in the challenge some day. As Cass pointed out, Mondays would be the best time to take on the challenge because wings are a quarter on Mondays at Blue-22.
Anyway, it was good to see my friends yesterday. In addition to Marc, Kelley, Cass, and Garv, my bff (Kerry), and my friends (Jen, Andrea, Ellen, Leeann, De, and Carol) were in attendance. There definitely were a lot of us there last night to celebrate Marc's birthday.
Of course, with so many people, it does get hard to chat with everyone. Hence, that is one of my reasons for disliking the rectangular table set up. (Granted, we had a circular table next to two square tables, but the end result was a rectangular table.) I sometimes feel bad that I don't get the converse much with people at the other end of the table.
Regardless, I had a blast. For me, one of the highlights was when Kelley shoved both ends of an onion into her nose in an attempt to make a bull ring. Yes, she was sober... but I had dared her to create the bull ring in her nose. Apparently, onions can burn.
Another bizarre happening was our discussion of tampons and vodka. I don't remember how that topic even came up. I could be mistaken, but I think Jen may have been the culprit. Interestingly enough, somehow that topic led to the male equivalent of beer funneling through the butt.
(The video below is about vodka tampons.)
For anyone curious, the principle behind the whole concept is having alcohol enter the bloodstream faster. As much as I enjoy booze, I prefer the old fashioned method of imbibing it. Although, a picture of that would be quite interesting for a photo scavenger hunt.
Anyway, it was a fun and silly time. I hope Marc enjoyed his birthday celebration.

I Suck At Trivia Night
Last night, my friend (Marc) organized another trivia night gathering at Blue 22 in Quincy. Too bad I suck at trivia night. Suffice to say, I was not really in the mood for trivia. Of course, I have not been in the mood for many things lately.
Regardless, it was good to see everyone on the trivia team again. The team comprised of Karen, my BFF (Kerry), Marc, and my friends (Kelley, Cass, and Andrea). I was technically on the team, but I did not contribute anything to the team yesterday. In fact, I feel that way a lot with trivia. I am certain the team would do just fine without me.
Anyway, it was good to see everyone. Andrea was gracious enough to provide some brain food for all of us... and by brain food, I mean chocolate peanut butter balls. (Cue Rachael Ray's "Yum-O" sound.) In addition to the chocolate peanut butter balls, it was definitely good to hang out with Cass. I don't hang out with Cass as much as I would like to. He provided some comic relief for the night.
As for the trivia itself, our team performed well. The last time we played trivia, we ended up taking first place and added to our growing collection of glasses. So for us, last night was our chance to defend our title... and perhaps score more glasses.
Kerry actually had a good first round. Truth be told, the team did pretty well. We ended up taking first place again last night. So we did score more glasses. For anyone curious, the glasses were for Killian's. I am guessing we would have scored the glasses regardless because most other teams would probably take the cash discount. Lucky for us, we know one of the owners (Garv).
Speaking of Garv, it was good to also see him last night. He had his country music moment. His eyes lit up as he told us about the concert he went to that featured Taylor Swift... and Keith Urban. But I think it was mainly because of Taylor Swift.
Anyway, another picture was taken of our team for winning trivia last night. So the next time you visit Blue 22 in Quincy, make sure you look for both of our group pictures now.
All in all, last night was okay. It was great to see everyone. It was great that we won again, despite the awful trivia announcer. The trivia announcer apparently was in a bad mood and took forever to read the questions because she was too busy chitchatting about personal stuff with some of the other patrons. And even when she did read the questions, she did not even read them clearly. (It was a longer than usual night of trivia.)
But all was good. We got our glasses.

I Suck At Trivia Night
last night, karen and i hung out with my friends (marc and kelley). with the season of "lost" over, we decided to do something a little bit different yesterday. we decided to try our hand at trivia night. now, i suck at trivia night. unfortunately last night, everyone else sucked too.
every wednesday, a company called stump! trivia has a team trivia contest at my friend's (garv) bar: blue 22 in quincy. marc and kelley were gracious enough to organize our team for the night. the team consisted of marc, kelley, karen, myself, and our friends (andrea, jen, and hot amy). the latter two, however, were simply there for the dinner portion of the night... not so much for the trivia.
speaking of dinner, i actually had to forego most of the eating last night. my company had a departmental barbeque earlier in the day. needless to say, i may have overeaten a little during that cookout. i practically ate a cow... if not a cow, then maybe a calf. the steak tips were just that good. (cue rachael ray's "yum-o" sound.) and sure, i'm probably paying for the mass consumption of beef now... but it sure did taste good.
anyway, our team did not really do too well. the good news was... we weren't last. the bad news... we only beat the teams that had quit for the night. sadly, the only question i was able to really help with had to do with the song "what hurts the most". the question was something along the lines of: what grammy-nominated country song in 2003 was remade by cascada?
by no means am i a country music fan. sure, there are some country tunes that i enjoy because the songs are quite catchy. the reason i knew the answer, however, was because i happen to own two of cascada's albums... and "what hurts the most" happens to be on one of those albums. (i'm technically asian... so i have to enjoy techno dance music, right?)
(the video below is cascada's version of "what hurts the most".)
that was about the highlight of my trivia night. in our defense, we have not done trivia in quite some time. andrea was relatively new to trivia as it was only her second time ever. as for the rest of us, we just needed to dust off the cobwebs.
despite our poor performance, i had a great time. should we attempt to do trivia again (and i have a funny suspicion that we will because andrea is quite competitive), we should perhaps start brushing up on the fairly common topics of tv, movies, and music.
all in all, i did have a good time. it was good to see everyone and hang out.

I Suck At Chauffeuring
wednesday nights are my usual nights to pick up the two miss daisies (karen and hot amy) from simmons college and chauffeur their sorry butts home. now, i suck at chauffeuring. yesterday, however, was quite the occasion because last night marked the end of my driving duties for the year. karen and hot amy are done teaching at simmons college for the semester . yay!
to prepare for the final ride, i donned on my yellow and blue simmons t-shirt. in case you are curious, the only reason why i even have a yellow and blue simmons t-shirt is because the t-shirt used to belong to karen. karen ran cross country for the simmons "sharks" and ended up receiving a t-shirt for her efforts. sadly, the t-shirt was too large for her. hence, i ended up showing my solidarity with simmons college by being able to fit into the t-shirt.
as well, i tidied up the car for the final ride of the season. okay, so maybe i did not really tidy up the car for the final ride. by "tidying up", i mean i moved my little stuffed animal in the back seat... up to the front. i have a red stuffed animal of a lobster, who i call "rock". karen had given me the lobster when we were in college. the reason why i moved "rock": hot amy.
awhile ago, i kidnapped hot amy's stuffed animal (wally) from the back seat of her car to see if she would even notice the disappearance. well, as it turned out, she did not notice the disappearance of wally until i posted a message about it on this blog... which was over a week after the actual kidnapping. i am still holding wally hostage, but it's okay. wally appears to enjoy being detained... evident from the big happy smile on his face.
anyway, in my stuffed animal's (rock) usual place, was a container of armorall cleaning wipes. for anyone curious, i don't own any armorall cleaning wipes. the cleaning wipes actually belonged to... you guessed it... hot amy. i happened to steal those from the backseat of her car too. and the funny thing... she didn't notice that the cleaning wipes were gone either until she saw them in the backseat of my car.
needless to say, it was a good thing that i moved my little stuffed lobster because hot amy immediately inquired about his whereabouts when she got into the car. i had a hunch that she would attempt to kidnap him in retaliation and i think i may have been right. (it pays to be one step ahead...)
regardless, the ride home was fun. no accidents is always a good sign. as it was karen and hot amy's last day teaching at simmons, we decided to celebrate. the place we chose to celebrate: blue-22.
(pictured below are hot amy and karen celebrating their last day of teaching for the semester.)

we were hoping to see my friend (garv) at blue 22 because he is usually there on wednesdays. sadly, the very intellectual garv... as hot amy would have you believe... was "slacking" according to his cousin (steph). garv was out playing hockey.
so instead, we enjoyed ourselves to dinner and... some trivia. (for anyone curious, i had a burger... and also for those who do not know: wednesday nights are trivia nights at blue 22) trivia was actually pretty fun. the three of us did not actually play. but, we did help out garv's wife (leeann) and her friends (neluka and patti). (we had noticed patti from afar, as she was in her scrubs.)
anyway, it was a good time to say the least... especially since my chauffeuring duties are over.
to prepare for the final ride, i donned on my yellow and blue simmons t-shirt. in case you are curious, the only reason why i even have a yellow and blue simmons t-shirt is because the t-shirt used to belong to karen. karen ran cross country for the simmons "sharks" and ended up receiving a t-shirt for her efforts. sadly, the t-shirt was too large for her. hence, i ended up showing my solidarity with simmons college by being able to fit into the t-shirt.
as well, i tidied up the car for the final ride of the season. okay, so maybe i did not really tidy up the car for the final ride. by "tidying up", i mean i moved my little stuffed animal in the back seat... up to the front. i have a red stuffed animal of a lobster, who i call "rock". karen had given me the lobster when we were in college. the reason why i moved "rock": hot amy.
awhile ago, i kidnapped hot amy's stuffed animal (wally) from the back seat of her car to see if she would even notice the disappearance. well, as it turned out, she did not notice the disappearance of wally until i posted a message about it on this blog... which was over a week after the actual kidnapping. i am still holding wally hostage, but it's okay. wally appears to enjoy being detained... evident from the big happy smile on his face.
anyway, in my stuffed animal's (rock) usual place, was a container of armorall cleaning wipes. for anyone curious, i don't own any armorall cleaning wipes. the cleaning wipes actually belonged to... you guessed it... hot amy. i happened to steal those from the backseat of her car too. and the funny thing... she didn't notice that the cleaning wipes were gone either until she saw them in the backseat of my car.
needless to say, it was a good thing that i moved my little stuffed lobster because hot amy immediately inquired about his whereabouts when she got into the car. i had a hunch that she would attempt to kidnap him in retaliation and i think i may have been right.
I Still Suck At Blue 22
yesterday was my normal night to drive the two miss daisies home. by the term, "the two miss daisies", i am referring to karen and my friend (hot amy) who both teach a course at simmons college.
karen had expected the two of them to finish rather late with their teaching. luckily for them, my chauffeuring services tend to arrive rather early. (i like to be early, if not punctual for things.)
anyway, as i was driving in to pick karen and hot amy up, i noticed a truck that was a couple of blocks ahead of me. naturally, i got pretty excited when i saw the truck because it had the name of my favorite brother-in-law (pj) on it. so like any good driver who should be focusing on the road when driving, i pulled out my camera and drove as fast as i could to get next to the truck. luckily for me, i caught up with the truck at an intersection with a stop light.
(the picture below is of the truck.)

for anyone curious, pj does not own the truck. the name was just one of those coincidences. i thought it was pretty neat. yes, it's the little things that i get excited about.
anyway, i arrived to pick up karen and hot amy. nothing too exciting happened on the ride home. hot amy polished off the peanut butter and jelly sandwich that i made for her. the both of them also ate most of the strawberries i brought too. (the strawberries smelled good... cue rachael ray's "yum-o" sound.)
on the way home, my friend (marc) had called. apparently, my other friend (scott) was up from new york and wanted to get together... that night. seeing as how we haven't seen scott in a while, we naturally agreed. the place that he wanted to go: blue 22 in quincy.
as it turned out, we were heading in the direction of blue 22 anyway because hot amy had parked her car at the quincy center train station. and because karen is a worry-wart, we walked hot amy to her car... because a person with a knife or gun would never attack three people in a dark garage... but it was all good because hot amy ended up giving us a ride to the front of blue 22.
anyway, i still suck at blue 22. interestingly enough, it was the second time in six days that we have been to blue 22. prior to that, i can't remember the last time i have been there... possibly on my friend's (garv) birthday... which is in january.
it also happens that garv was working last night. so, basically scott, garv, marc, my friend (kelley), karen and i got to hang out together... amid the trivia night that was going on. (as a side note, i dislike it when a team playing trivia night has more than the allotted number of players... that's just cheating. okay, so maybe i'm a stickler for rules.)
it was great seeing scott. scott seems to be in good spirits, considering him and his family have recently been flooded out of their house in new york. as scott told us, there was water flowing out of the windows on his second floor. for anyone curious, scott and his family went on a trip to the dominican republic only to return to a flooded house. the furnace died while they were away and one of the pipes burst. that's a major bummer.
i enjoy scott's stories. scott told us about how his son (xavier) tells himself jokes and just cracks up laughing. xavier also points at things with his middle finger... all interesting facts, i know.
anyway, it was a great time last night... hanging out with friends. it was even great to see garv's cousin (steph) who waited our table. steph is great. oh, and for anyone curious, i had the beer-basted burger last night. it was good. needless to say, it was a fun night.

I Suck At Blue 22
friday night, karen and i went to blue 22. now i suck at blue 22. despite the fact that my friend (hot amy) used to love going to blue 22 for certain reasons, neither karen nor i have been to blue 22 in quite some time with a bunch of friends... that is... until friday.
my friend (cass) organized a little get together at blue 22 because his good friend (jim) whom he met in college was in town. jim, his wife (monica), and his daughter (grace) live in san diego.
i first met jim a long time ago when cass and i took a weekend trip to chicago... in december. yes, chicago is very cold in december. they don't call chicago the windy city for nothing. anyway, we actually stayed with jim on our trip because jim was already living out there for his work. (and for anyone curious, it was probably the first and last time i was allowed to use jim's bathroom... a result of the veggie burger that i ate prior to arriving in chicago.)
anyway, cass thought it would be a fun to get everyone together to hang out with jim. apparently, jim had not gone out with his friends in about a year... most likely the result of not knowing anyone in san diego. after friday night, jim may not want to ever go out again with friends. just kidding.
when my friends (marc and kelley), karen, and i first arrived at blue 22, we saw my friend (garv) sitting in the corner... by himself... reading a newspaper. i actually thought it was a picture moment, not because garv was reading... but because the headline of the newspaper was about a union. i just thought it was funny to see garv reading an article about the union, especially since he almost had an altercation over the same union mentioned in the article.
everyone else shortly arrived thereafter: garv's wife (leeann), cass's wife (ellen), cass and jim, cass's brother (bj), and a couple of bj's other friends... one of which gave me a hug at the end of the night. i have no idea who she was... other than the fact that her name sounded familiar. if i didn't know any better, i would say she was trying to cop a feel. just kidding.
needless to say, it was fun. kelley and i imbibed on a couple of starburst martinis each. there may have been some beer drinking as well. apparently, kelley knocked over her drink during the course of the night. i didn't remember that incident. i did, however, remember feeling beer envy over garv's bottle of beer. garv's bottle of beer looked impressive compared to mine. damn garv... just kidding.
oh... and there were lots and lots of wings. (cue rachael ray's "yum-o" sound.) everyone at the table, particularly me, devoured the asian flavored wings. they were quite good... and i may have been quite hungry due to the liquids. karen even enjoys the wings from blue 22 as well. karen, however, has yet to learn the ancient chinese secret of eating wings. (by secret, i mean the ability to stick a chicken wing in the mouth... and then remove just the bone of the wing when pulling the wing out.)
all in all, i don't think we scared off the waitperson... so that's good. for anyone curious, it was her second day on the job according to garv. but, i think jim had a good time hanging out with everyone. at least, i hope he did.

I Suck At Halloween
tonight, karen and i celebrated halloween at my friend's (garv) restaurant... blue 22. too bad i suck at halloween.
it's been a surprising halloween thus far. i was expecting a lot of children to go trick-or-treating this year because halloween was on a friday. plus, the temperature was nice and warm. i figured all of that would produce a lot of trick-or-treaters this year. sadly, i was mistaken.
we ended the night with very few trick-or-treaters. after the children in our neighborhood finished their trick-or-treating, karen and i went to garv's restaurant, blue 22, to celebrate the night. karen went as a mushroom. it was a very neat costume. karen took a sombrero and added fabric and padding to it to create a mushroom cap. the cap did not look that big until she placed it on her head. apparently, she had gotten the idea from my friend (jen) who saw the costume on television.
as for me, i did not have a costume. i really am not into gettting dressed up. stretching for ideas, i decided to go as a computer virus. i went to my friend's (marc) place and printed out the source code for the melissa virus. i thought it was fitting because my ex-girlfriend was named melissa. i like to refer to her as the "scourge of evil" at times. i mean it in the best possible way of course.
anyway, karen and i picked up marc (who dressed up as the dude from the movie "the big lebowski") and headed to blue 22. it was totally fun. blue 22 offered free food consisting of pasta salad, chicken fingers, chicken wings, and french fries.
my friends (jen, hot amy, kerry and bill) met us at the restaurant. also at the restaurant was garv and his wife (leeann) and my friend's (cass) brother (bj). it was a fun time. bill actually won a prize for his costume. he went as captain hook.
(pictured below is bill as captain hook.)

i think next year, i'll try to get into the halloween spirit and get all dressed up. like i keep telling myself, i just need time to plan a costume. now that i have a year, that should be plenty of time... or at least that is what i tell myself.
growing up, i always thought it would be cool to get dressed up as a knight for halloween... complete with plates of armor and chainmail. i imagine it would be tough to use the bathroom wearing all of that attire, but i thought it would be cool nonetheless.
for anyone curious, that is how i decided to use the handle "cavalier". not only does the definition of the word mean knight, the word "cavalier" also means "marked by or given to offhand and often disdainful dismissal of important matters" according to the merriam webster online dictionary, which i would say describes my instigating attitude fairly well. apparently, the definition also means debonair too. so all in all, i thought "cavalier" would be a good name to use for me.
anyway, as much as i liked the idea of dressing up in a suit of armor, i probably will never do it. i'm afraid that once i don the armor, that the whole costume thing becomes borderline LARPing... not that there is anything wrong with that of course. i just don't want to perpetuate my geekiness any further. that's all.

I Suck At Blue-22
yesterday, a bunch of us celebrated my friend's (kelley) birthday.
we ended up celebrating kelley's birthday at blue-22. my friend (hot amy) would have been proud. too bad i suck at blue-22
anyway, blue-22 subscribes to the nfl sunday ticket. so, any football game can be broadcast within the bar. in addition, they usually have specials on certain things on sundays... like wings... which incidentally are one of my friend's (garv) favorite food items. garv also happens to be a part owner of blue-22, so it only seems fitting about the wings.
in addition to the food specials, blue-22 had wbcn and crash clark there yesterday. crash is a big miami fan, evident from his reggie roby punter jersey. i'm not exactly sure how garv got wbcn to come, but it made for an entertaining birthday celebration for kelley.
naturally, because wbcn was giving away free schwag, i attempted to do what i could to score kelley some items. it was, after all, her birthday celebration. the main item that wbcn was giving away... bret michael's tickets! for anyone curious, bret michaels was the lead singer in the band, poison. he has since had a reality tv show called "rock of love" where he tries to find his soul mate. truth be told, i did not even know he was touring.
crash would have given us the tickets because... well... really, who wants bret michaels tickets? i didn't even want the tickets, but i thought it would have been funny to get them for kelley. unfortunately, there was one woman (jane) at the bar who wanted the tickets. not to give up without a fight, i told crash i wanted the tickets too. or more appropriately, everyone at the table (marc, karen, garv, leeann, kelley, de, and carol) told crash that i wanted the tickets.
so crash concocted a competition for the bret michael's tickets. that competition... karaoke. the song... "every rose has its thorn". the winner is decided by the patrons of blue-22.
first up... me. as the song started playing, i started to hum. i had no idea what the words were. while humming, i started to sway like axl rose... in hopes that i could remember the lyrics. and then... "every rose has its thorn... just like every night... has its dawn... just like every cowboy sings a sad sad song... every rose has its thorn... yeah it does..."
next up... jane. if you thought i didn't know the lyrics, jane knew considerably less lyrics than i did about the song. she was even a little off key when she did attempt to sing.
when all was said and done... the patrons voted and the winner was... jane.
not that i am a sore loser or anything, but i was totally robbed. i don't think anyone in the bar would argue that my rendition of "every rose has its thorn" was much better than jane's. jane, unfortunately, happens to be better shaped than i am... subsequently, she is much more easier on the eyes than me. hell, i even voted for jane.
truth be told, had i really won the competition, i probably would have given jane the tickets anyway. after all, what am i going to do with bret michaels tickets? kelley didn't even want them. so the tickets might as well be put to good use. hm... perhaps my friend (hot amy) and i should have a karaoke competition at blue-22. she'd actually have a better chance of winning against me. we could even wager apple crisp!
as a consolation prize, i received for my efforts the speed racer dvd. exciting i know. kelley didn't want that dvd either. she did, however, get a free wbcn t-shirt. so at least kelley got some schwag yesterday.
anyway, i hope kelley had a good time yesterday. happy birthday again!

I Suck At Scene It
today is the normal day i hang out with my friends (marc and kelley).
as it was a nice day out, we decided to go out for dinner. my friend (hot amy) would have been jealous because the place we ended up at for dinner was blue-22. hot amy claims that her penchant for frequenting blue-22 is due to the great tasting martinis. more appropriately... martini... singular. i am not sure hot amy can handle more than one martini. in some circles, hot amy would be known as a cheap date.
anyway, blue-22 was empty tonight. we didn't get to see our friend (garv) who is a partial owner of the restaurant. in fact, we even didn't get to see one of the other partial owners (jeff) who alternates with garv on certain days. jeff's wife was due to deliver a baby over the past weekend. we did, however, get to see one of the guests at garv's wedding (she's the bartender). as well, our usual waitstaffer was there... only not working.
as we were leaving, the trivia team from stump was entering. in case anyone is curious, wednesdays are trivia nights at blue-22. i enjoy stump's trivia nights... although the last and only time i've been to trivia night at blue-22 was not so fun... even though we won a t-shirt for my friend (ellen). the reason it was not so fun was because we were competing against some obnoxious teams that night. i think some people get a little too into trivia night... it's just a game after all.
needless to say, we did not participate in trivia night at blue-22. feeling nostalgic for trivia night, we did the next best thing... we played scene it. too bad i suck at scene it. for anyone curious, scene it is a movie trivia game.
we went to best buy and picked up the scene it game for the xbox 360 game console. from there, we went back to marc and kelley's to play the game. the game for the xbox 360 comes with four specially designed individual controllers. thus, each of us competed against each other in the game. unfortunately, the game wasn't really much of a competition. marc and kelley are trivia gurus. i was lucky enough to finish third... ahead of karen... who never had cable growing up.
anyway, i had a good time tonight... if not playing scene it, then just hanging out with my friends.

as we were leaving, the trivia team from stump was entering. in case anyone is curious, wednesdays are trivia nights at blue-22. i enjoy stump's trivia nights... although the last and only time i've been to trivia night at blue-22 was not so fun... even though we won a t-shirt for my friend (ellen). the reason it was not so fun was because we were competing against some obnoxious teams that night. i think some people get a little too into trivia night... it's just a game after all.
needless to say, we did not participate in trivia night at blue-22. feeling nostalgic for trivia night, we did the next best thing... we played scene it. too bad i suck at scene it. for anyone curious, scene it is a movie trivia game.
we went to best buy and picked up the scene it game for the xbox 360 game console. from there, we went back to marc and kelley's to play the game. the game for the xbox 360 comes with four specially designed individual controllers. thus, each of us competed against each other in the game. unfortunately, the game wasn't really much of a competition. marc and kelley are trivia gurus. i was lucky enough to finish third... ahead of karen... who never had cable growing up.
anyway, i had a good time tonight... if not playing scene it, then just hanging out with my friends.
