I Suck At Car Accidents

Last night was an interesting night.

In an effort to do some holiday shopping, Karen and I went to the Derby Shoppes located in Hingham. Unfortunately for me, I still do not have any ideas yet on what to get Karen for Christmas. As the days get closer to Christmas, I may have to resort to my old fallback plan of "the big box of nothing".

Karen and I had a good time at the Derby Shoppes. Before our shopping spree, we grabbed a quick dinner at the Chipotle Mexican Grill, which had recently opened last week (Wednesday). Karen had never been to Chipotle's, so it was a new experience for her. For anyone curious, the burritos are delicious there. (Cue Rachael Ray's "Yum-O" sound.)

Following our quick trip to the Derby Shoppes, we headed home. As we were driving down route 53 (south), we noticed a police car blocking the street near the intersection to our house, which is near the Stop and Shop. As well, there was a police officer directing traffic. And by directing traffic, I mean the police officer was signaling for the cars to turn around.

As we approached the police officer and explained that we lived just on the other side of his vehicle, he told us to loop around to the other side of route 53 using the back roads. Naturally, like any good law-biding citizen, I turned the car around and looped around to the other side of route 53.

On the other side of route 53, we then encountered a similar set up. Another police car was blocking traffic and another police officer was directing cars to turn around. Intrigued, we explained to the officer that the other officer directed us to drive around to enter the street that leads to our house.

Since the police officer was from the neighboring town, he then suggest that we loop around the back of Stop and Shop and try that way. Being from another town, the police officer was not familiar with the streets of Norwell.

Lo and behold, the police officer's suggestion worked! We cut through the back of Stop and Shop and made it to the intersection leading to our house. Apparently, near the intersection was a car accident.

Now, I suck at car accidents. Unfortunately, this accident looked pretty serious. Last night, Karen and I were only able to make out a shopping cart lying on the road, with another vehicle pulled over to the side.

It turns out, someone was struck by a car. According to the Boston Globe, a 64 year old woman from Norwell was killed as she pushed a shopping cart across route 53. The driver was a 76 year old man from Scituate.

That's very sad.
